Three tips to get you from here to there. Many drivers are distracted while driving; blame smartphones.

When you send or read a text message, you take your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds. That covers the length of a football field while driving 55 mph. Take control of your tech usage and get where you’re going with these three tips:

  1. Avoid all use of your phone while driving. Handheld and hands-free mobile devices are distracting. Set up “Do Not Disturb” to keep you focused.

  2. Lead by example. Pull over to a safe place if you need to call or text.
  3. Set rules. Give new drivers clear instructions to avoid using their cellphones when driving.
